Blasting Fascia

Recently FaceBook starting running a product ad. It promoted a tool that helps bust through the layered psychosomatic conditioning in the body. Though marketed for the esthetic benefits, this author is here to tell you that you get a whole lot more.

 

The tool is called the fascia blaster. The simple design will make any bodyworkers’ hands shake with envy. It was created by a massage therapist, so the intention was probably more therapeutic than cosmetic.

 

But let’s start there. The cosmetic application is to smooth out the bumpy, lumpy appearance of cellulite. To understand how that works, a brief anatomical lesson is in order.

 

Fascia (pronounced fah-shah or fey-shuh) is a form of connective tissue, of which the body has several types. Depending on the density of the extra cellular matrix, the connective tissue can be blood, fascia, tendons, ligaments, or bones. Fascia is classified by layer, as superficial fascia, deep fascia, and visceral or parietal fascia, or by its function and anatomical location. [1] Generally when referenced, fascia refers to the wrapper that encases the muscles and lies between the skin and muscle. But scholars have said that the body is more accurately described as “one muscle with 600 fascial pockets.”[2]

Considered the organ of support, fascia is involved in everything. It is key in somatic intelligence, dramatic-traumatic memory, athletic performance, injury recovery, range of motion, stability, and even breathing. Many practitioners believe that the body’s bioenergetic system (acupuncture meridians and nadis) has its anatomical basis in fascia.[3]

 

Tom Myers, an incredible anatomist and bodyworker, has dissected the body’s fascial planes. He’s developed the concept of “anatomy trains” to educate his students in its importance and effective therapeutic applications of structural integration.[4] Serendipitously, the fascial planes match the acupuncture channels.

 

This connection between the energy flow and fascia is important. Primarily because ‘energy in motion’ is also known as e-motion. Our health and well being is dependent on a balanced, free flow of energy and e-motion. In Chinese Medicine, the primary cause of any dysfunction, imbalance or disease is stagnant e-motion.

 

When energy becomes stagnate or repressed, there is a literal calcification that happens in the body’s tissues, particularly in the fascia. This calcification or toughness is from a scarring response in the fascia—it builds areas thicker and more tendon-like. Eventually, these underlying ‘patterns’ in the fascia become obvious on the skin’s surface.

 

Those patterns of fascial adhesions appear as ripples, dimples, and bumps on the body. Deep patterns can even shift, contort or bend bones into positions that are not anatomically correct. Just think of an elder person that can’t stand up completely straight. That’s strong fascia holding them crooked.

 

As far as cellulite goes, picture a marshmallow and fishnet stockings. The marshmallow represents fat cells of the body that EVERY body has. The lumps and bumps appear when the fascial layer becomes thickened and restrictive. The fascia becomes stretched taut over the fat, like stretching a small pair of fishnets over a big bag of marshmallows. The result shows the less desired dimples, ripples or bumps women fear called cellulite.

 

Toxins, injury, poor diet, lack of movement, emotional stress and stagnant energy are among the main causes of cellulite. However, this author believes the stagnant energy and emotional repressed stress are the main culprits. If energy is flowing freely, the fascia is natural and healthy. There will be no appearance of cellulite. Its that simple.

There are therapies that aim to relieve any fascial adhesions and scarring, such as structural integration, Rolfing, myo-fascial release, cupping, and deep stretching. Most of these approaches require an experienced practitioner. Until now, enter the fascia blaster…

 

Basically this tool is a stick with 4 sets of prongs or claws that is rubbed and scrubbed along areas of concern. When ‘blasting’ or breaking up the fascia restrictions some bruising may occur. This is a part of the healing process.

This author’s experience after a week was unexpected. From a lifestyle of healthful practices, fascial patterns have lessened. However, the blaster helped blast open old injuries and ingrained somatic conditioning in 4 sessions.

 

The result of freeing up the fascia, besides being sore, was any repressed ‘energy in motion’ bubbled up. Conscious engagement of the content of those patterns helped mediate outbursts of irritability and feelings of insecurity that surfaced. Memories from high school percolated out through dreams. It even knocked loose a pattern that had contorted the rib cage. And, muscles engaged in ways they hadn’t in years.

 

The most exciting, though intense, aspect of the fascia blaster’s tissue release is its full body impact. By blasting the abdomen, the connected fascial patterns radiated with soreness. It traced from the ankle through the hip flexors, solar plexus around the ribs to the base of the neck and throat. Talk about awesome. The significance of that is this author has had injuries and health concerns along that entire path.

 

What a blessing it is to have a simple tool that helps everything!

 

Its amazing…the connectivity between our sense of being and characteristics to our physical self. We are truly holistic beings, “as within so without.”

 

With that in mind know that when you get a fascia blaster, you will get a whole lot more than smooth legs. Remember that the deep ‘inner work’ of healing is just as crucial as the external blasting. Both will help you and your fascia heal and remain healthy.
